Yeah, no nostalgia for any iteration of magnetic tape here. Still
think it cool what 2XL did with using different tracks for creating
interactive audio programs, but you could do far more sophisticated
things in that vein with a little programming and digital audio
files(at the very least, you could have more than 4 parallel program
paths, all the digital audio could be stereo or even surround, and you
wouldn't have to adjust content to make all paths equal length.
As for the web, for the most part, I'll take the modern web over the
web of the late 90s. Sure, there are plenty of web designers who could
do with a reminder that not everyone is glued to a touchscreen or
mouse and that not everything has to be done with JavaScript and I
don't care for modern social media, but I think the last 20 years has
seen more good than bad in the evolution of the Internet.
I will admit that I do pretty much all of my document editing in nano,
save everything in plain text, and think the only thing word
processors are good for is making pretty hardcopies, but hey, part of
what I like about Linux is it gives one the freedom to be as modern or
retro in one's choice of applications instead of trying to make
everyone conform to the latest trends.
I won't be trying an iPhone anytime soon(setting aside that I've
always disliked Apple's Walled Garden, our way or the high way
mentality, the person in my household who actually knows there way
around smartphones is an Android loyalist, and I have no interest in
Braille. Do wish there where more devices with built-in keyboards or
at least a USB-A port so I didn't need an adaptor to hook up
non-bluetooth keyboards. More devices without built-in screens would
be nice too.
That's what I like about the Raspberry Pi, it's like the only
pocket-sized general purpose computer on the mainstream market that
doesn't sacrifice wired connectivity to shrink an already tiny form
factor and doesn't force one to waste money on a screen if they don't
need one. It's not quite an anti-tablet, but it's probably closer to
my ideal portable device than anything else on the mainstream market.
