Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Davidson Co.
Nashville, TN
Tuesday, 21 September
7-10 am
clear and cool

It was a glorious morning at Radnor Lake and the birds certainly
knew it. Tuesday morning was my best day so far this fall and
the most active place was around the dam and ranger's house next
to the lake. Although I took my usual route from the west parking
lot to long bridge and back, I got hung up at the dam for over
an hour as a huge mixed flock of warblers (again dominated by
MAGNOLIAs and AM. REDSTARTs), vireos, flycatchers,
grosbeaks, and other birds. Some other places on the trail
produced smaller flocks. I finished with 12 species of warblers
and 4 species of vireos and flycatchers, including my first
PHILADELPHIA VIREOs of the season. There were plenty of more
common birds such as BLUE JAYs and a murder of at least 25
AMERICAN CROWs flew over. A large contingent of CHIMNEY SWIFTS
numbering 100+ swirled around the dam area, and later there was
a lone COMMON NIGHTHAWK. Several flocks of CEDAR WAXWINGs were
also encountered.

On my walk back toward the dam area I ran into Kevin Bowden,
who said that the flock at the dam had continued after I had
left. He had a WILSON'S WARBLER and immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER
to add to the Radnor day list. More observers would likely have
produced additional species that I missed.

Green Heron 3
Yellow-billed Cuckoo 2
