On this rainy morning our stalwart group of five tallied 35 species. Most
notable were a very cooperative field sparrow near the second overlook and a
palm warbler in a mixed flock along the holding basin. The fox grapes attracted
good numbers of birds. Upstream the river was very quiet although we had a
common merganser which we haven't seen for some time. Last week two eagles
were on a snag to the right of the tree with the remnants of last year's nest;
this week there was one eagle. We are hoping that they will rebuild the nest.
All are welcome to join this regular Sunday walk that meets at 8:00am in the
visitors center parking lot. -- Marshall Rawson, McLean VA
