The rain held off at Merrimac Farm until we were safely settled on the front
porch of the stone house tallying the list on this morning's Prince William
Conservation Alliance last Sunday Bird Walk. And then it poured! I guess the
threat of rain kept people away as there were only two of us, but we managed 23
species. Our highlights were a Prairie Warbler in the trees near the barn,
accompanied by at least one other unidentified warbler or Vireo; many
White-eyed Vireos; and a Barred Owl that we flushed near the pond. He flew
into a nearby tree and watched us iindignantly for about 20 seconds, and then
flew off into the woods. PWCA sponsors a nature walk on the last Sunday of
every month at the Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area in Nokesville.
