A pretty morning at Occoquan. The river was very quiet but the woods and
fields were birdy. Highlights were a flyover American pipit, eastern
meadowlark, fox sparrow, gray catbird, brown thrasher, common yellowthroat,
hermit thrush, and savannah sparrows. The only water birds I could find were
ruddy duck (150), wood duck (12), mallard (6), Canada goose, pied-billed grebe
(65), American coot (1000), and dc cormorant (400). The cormorants were in one
huge raft off of Deephole pt. I guess all the ducks are in Alexandria. Also
of note were the numerous kinglets, of both species. They were present in all
the parts of the refuge I visited.
