Thanks, Mayrie, for your post in answer to mine.
I am really hoping I do not sound like a complainer on this. But I guess I do.
I did not read those earlier posts about the books supplied by the publisher. 
So I apologize for posting on a topic probably covered there and back again.

I perhaps posted too hastily until I had tried my newly downloaded book on each 
device. 
Because now, I see there is some differences in how they behave. Let me go 
ahead and take a minute and report on it.

I have several devices. Embarrassing as it is, I have just gone ahead and 
purchased several.  

I have the old Book Port, which I still use quite a bit.
The new book I mentioned will not load at all on the unit. I don’t know why.

On the Victor Reader Stream, the book navigates by line, phrase, and level one, 
which just goes to “begin reading,” and then to “end of book.”
Now, perhaps I should not even put this in the DTB folder?

I use Kurzweil but usually just for scanning and some editing, and for creating 
Daisy audio files of my own scanned books and magazines.  
Perhaps I should start using it more for Bookshare books.

On my pc, I have mostly used FS Reader, version 2.
It usually has the sections broken up enough for me to quickly read Newsline 
newspapers and sometimes I check and read parts of Bookshare books this way.

I have always launched Bookshare books by hitting ENTER on the dot o p f files 
after downloading them into their own newly created folder. 
FS Reader has been set to be my default for this. 

I only really opened the book I mentioned with the file using extensions of 
.opf.  
It sounds like from what you have said, Mayrie, that I should start to hit 
ENTER on the HTML file, to have those heading marks.

Lastly, I have loaded the book into my Book Port Plus.
And I do find that using this device, this book has more Daisy navigation. It 
has Levels 1 and 2, and it indeed does go to the various headings or chapters. 
And as you explained, it does not have any page navigation.  

I guess one of the big things I have learned is that there are no page numbers 
in electronic text from publishers.
I totally did not know that.  And I am sorry to hear it.  It has been one of 
the cool things I have enjoyed and become accustomed to in reading Bookshare 
books. 
Sort of different from the years of listening to tapes from NLS and never 
knowing what page I was on, and to be able to reference it, should I need or 
want to for some reason.

So there is my perhaps too extensive report.
But if any of what I have said can be prompting a suggestion, I am very much in 
appreciation for it.

Hi Rik,

I downloaded the book that you mention, and I'd like to know what daisy reader 
you're using. I can navigate by heading in this book just fine.  It's true that 
publisher quality books don't have page navigation, because, as we've discussed 
before on this list, but maybe not since you've been back with us, the 
electronic copies of books provided by the publishers to bookshare don't have 
pages or page numbers in them.  This is because page numbers and pages are only 
a function of printed books, determined by the size of print on a page and the 
size of the paper used.  The publishers choose these sizes and tell their 
printers what to do each time they want to print a copy or batch of copies from 
these electronic copies of the books.  Please ask more if that part isn't 
clear.  

Other than that, I see heading navigation for each what appears to be a story 
or chapter of the book using both the xml files, and Kurzweil 1000 version 
12.04.

So, if you can tell us what daisy reader you're using, maybe we can help you 
figure out why you don't see any daisy navigation in your book.

I am wondering about DAISY navigation in some of the new books in the Bookshare 
collection.  

I was very pleased and excited to see a new book just added to the collection.  
It says on the page that it was done by Bookshare Staff.  So I thought I would 
just contact Technical Support, to see if I could learn, or to give my input.

Why do some books really have zero Daisy navigation?
This new book, that I just downloaded (Here Comes Trouble by Michael Moore), 
really does not even have page navigation.  

After the preliminary permission text, there is a link in Level 1 to "Begin 
Reading."  And the next time I try to go to the next navigation point, it goes 
to "End of text."

There are numerous examples of this in other new additions. With the earlier 
books it is understandable. But now? Really?

This is way short of what we are capable of, isn't it?
We have the potential for 3 levels of Daisy navigation in many instances with 
the various recent devices available. And to be really providing reading 
materials, we should be able to access them as much as possible with sighted 
peers, to go to pages, chapters, and so on.

So, please, let's see about doing this with newly added content to our 
Bookshare Collection.
