So, in short, whenever you arm tracks for automation, then any parameter changes are recorded by default, and Control-R (just once) will take a snapshot of all armed parameters. Sometimes that's overkill, so it can be better to take a single snapshot of just one parameter, which you can do with applications-key then S.
