Oh yes, Susie, I got a document just last weeek with the Enter key
continually being used to make a page break. <g< Which is why I always say
that Duxbury does a phenomenal job with the awesome task it is given. When
you think about all the strange and unusual formatting "fix its" that are
sometimes used by those transcribing documents and then who knows what I
might throw into the mix, too. My Duxbury deserves a medal of honor for
just surviving me and all the sloppy documents I get to transcribe. But
then occasionally I'll get one that is wonderfully done--using all sorts of
wonderful macros and styles and stuff I don't even know about--and the
document comes out really beautiful. If all my documents were like that
then it would indeed be a beautiful world in which to work. But this is why
I'm so glad to have Duxbury because I just can't imagine any other
translator handling documents like Duxbury does. And I'd fight to keep my
Duxbury--oh yes I would! <g<

Hi Deb and all. We are talking here about doing away with WordPerfect and
only using Word and Duxbury to do our editing; those of us who love
WordPerfect have been continually pointing out that when we get a document
that is a mess, as you say, WordPerfect is the easiest and best way to
figure out what is causing the mess. The Friends of Word club says that
Word does indeed have macros for cleanup and that you can look at the codes
in a document; we are not convinced but may not have any choice. I don't
think there is any good answer for getting documents that are easy for
Duxbury to emboss. You'd have to train the whole world. Somebody yesterday
was telling me that they had a document where a new page was forced by
repeatedly hitting "enter". I have seen lines centered with spaces.
Obviously Duxbury goes nuts when this comes along. Then there are the text
boxes and all that other stuff. Duxbury is a wonderful program but it's not
magic.

Londa, I sure agree with you. If the documents I get for transcription were
okay to start with I could get them done in record time. But often, they're
done incorrectly or not using the styles and so forth that are available in
Word and they are a mess when I get them. I often tell those who work with
me that they have no real idea what we go through to get the documents
embossed in some sort of order.

Actually, the big problem for many of us is that we get documents which
someone else has created. Most of the time they aren't created well, so
then we have to use dbt to fix all the problems. It's either that or put
in and/or change style codes in word. I feel funny about playing with
someone else's word document that way. Just to throw another dilemma into
the picture.

There's certainly a lot to be said for doing that, especially when you
consider the power of a word processor. My own dilemma is figuring out
when it makes sense to use the word processor and when I should be tweaking
things in DBTW. Sometimes the importer does very well, but at other times
I simply have to work in DBT to get the results I want. That said, I'm all
for making things as easy and painless as possible.
