Hi Steve,

That is what I do too, when I know the underline is there in advance. I am
totally blind so I can't know by just glancing at the document. I am using
JAWS for Windows 3.5 and 4.5. When I read over a Microsoft Word document
that I have scanned or that another teacher has shared with me, I try to
remember to replace all underlines with nothing, or to replace them with
dashes if that is more appropriate. JAWS doesn't usually speak the
underlines because most of the time I am reading the Word document primarily
for content and how clearly it is written, so I am usually using JAWS set to
only speak some punctuation. I also try to remember to check for the other
problems I mentioned earlier. If I forget, I catch the problem when I
proofread the embossed braille copy. But, most sighted people who are
relying on the braille translation program to give them an automatic braille
copy don't do this, and are puzzled (some even a little annoyed) when I tell
them that they need to take the underlines away or take the number signs
away, etc.

When I braille documents that have underlines like that, I just remove them
and leave the rest of the line blank. That way, if someone is filling out
the form by inserting the page in a braille writer, he/she will have space
for the answer. I don't know if there's a rule for this, but I've just
given you Steve's rule.
