Hello,
I’ve been using computers since the mid 60’s. The early days were
line-oriented terminals and punch cards. When the GUI was developed, we were
all hopeful that we would have the same kind of access as the sighted world.
While over time access on Mac, Windows and IOS has improved, the same can not
be said of Linux. Linux has many terminal apps which are quite accessible with
either speech or Braille. As I see it, the main problem with the GUI access on
linux is the slowness of the interface between the X system and Orca. I think
there was an attempt to deal with this issue several years ago, the results
produced only marginal improvements.
Based on my experiences, the R-PI and linux is a great platform for text-based
apps, but the GUI is too slow to provide a pleasurable experience. Also the
GUI on other platforms have become much more stable and useful over time.
Just my two cents.
