Florian wrote: Hi,

I've been running into this problem myself. I actually built a pc from
scratch to put windows 7 on, since my laptop runs windows 10 and its too
much of a hassle to downgrade it, put an old version of JAWS on it, put
sonar on it, make sure all the hot spots work etc.
The classic theme, I think, is used for x-y coords, colours etc. I believe
the resolution may not exceed a certain ratio either for CT to work, am I
wrong?

Phil replied: you are correct.

Florian wrote: Ideally, a paid for product like CakeTalking should be
upgraded to work with windows 8+ since it's been a number of years now and
it's pretty clear that the classic theme is not coming back.

Phil replied: in an ideal world yes.

Florian wrote: There's two problems with that statement though:
- Sonar 8.5, itself, is very old software. If an upgrade for windows
8+ should be performed; the version of Sonar will likely have to be
Upgraded as well.

Phil replied: Sonar 8.5.3 works fine in Windows 8/10 although no doubt newer
versions of Sonar will be optimised for later versions of Windows.

Florian wrote: I don't know how much information the latest version of Sonar
gives screen reader script writers to work with, however, so I don't know if
that is a feasible option.

Phil replied: in theory it should be as newer versions of Sonar use UI
Automation wich is for sure a far more robust way of getting information to
screen readers than the CWACCESS Window. However, there are some bugs with
the current implementation of that and I couldn't say whether Cakewalk will
address that although, it's certainly possible that they will some time in
the future.

Florian wrote: - The second point is, at least from what I am seeing, the
decline of both Sonar and JAWS. I honestly only still use JAWS for Sonar,
for the rest my copy of NVDA suffices. The same can be said for Sonar only
being useful for me still due to the extensive scripts. Reaper 5 with the
Osara add-on is slowly but surely getting better each day and in that regard
mainly the hotspot sets written by Steve and others keep me from switching
to that DAW completely. You gotta admit that, roughly, 1000 dollars for
JAWS, + 300 for caketalking, + x-hundred for sonar 8.5 is quite a bit less
appealing than, what do Reaper licenses go for these days, 50 bucks?

Phil replied: think it's that or $60.00 although Reaper seems to be a bit of
a steep learning curve from that I can see at least from a MIDI point of
view.

Florian wrote: I'll be a sonar user for a while yet, due to the Kontakt
scripts, the way a lot of Sonar's built-in FX work with CT, the OrangeTree
sets and perhaps later the Melodyne sets etc. but the fact that CT has
literally not been updated in years with no plans to do so does seriously
rub me the wrong way.

Phil replied: there was the update to 8.8 although can't say what that
brings to the table as am still waiting for Dancing Dots to fully process my
order for Cake Talking 8.8 with the 25% Christmas discount :-)

Florian wrote: To get back on topic, the classic theme is gone and the hacks
out there that simulate it are hacks at best. They may visually be enough to
please people who want the windows 7 look, but I'll not believe for a second
that CT will work well with them unless the scripts are updated ...which
they apparently aren't going to be.

Phil replied: can't see that ever happening.
