Hi Phil, and Brian, Vista certainly has its issues, but I have frankly enjoyed using it due to the wsappi drivers, which makes it possible for me to take fulladvantage in using the input monitoring in Sonar giving me full access to panning, and proper volume control. I agree that vista is on its way out, and have tried a beta of windows 7, of course not using the scripts, or Sonar, and I can tell you that Windows 7 is definatly going to run smoother. Although I certainly hope the folk at Microsoft are going to give us Vista users a bit of a break. However I've certainly noticed a difference in Survice pac2 of Windows vista which I just downloaded a couple of days ago with responce.

Phil, I understand that you might personally be using only Cakewalk
instruments and other modern plug ins, but you probably aren't aware of
how many blind guys are still using the Edirol plugs, Hypersonic II, the
Korg plugs, and all sorts of legacy stuff because they're comfortable
with operating them. It pains me, but many people are using Cakewalk
TTS-1, and they're completely satisfied, as amazing as that sounds. Not
that TTS-1 has a problem on 64-bit, though. Just saying to give you an
idea about the old school mindset that goes on.

Your conspiracy theory remarks are amusing as always. I'm not trying to
talk you out of going 64-bit. If you know of a 64-bit access solution
for Sonar, by all means, go ahead an use it. We've publicly stated that
64-bit support is on the CakeTalking roadmap, and there is active work
toward that goal. As yet, though, this work isn't even in beta, so it
will be a little time yet before we can say anything here. Until then,
you'll just have to make due with 3.5GB of memory in Sonar. *smile*

However, I agree completely about Vista.

Bryan

Bryan wrote: But you won't want to, because most of the softsynths and
effects that blind people use are still 32-bit, and won't run well in
the 64-bit Sonar.

Phil replied: Hmm, all of Sonar's native .VST/.DXi audio affects E.G,
the entire Sonitus suite, Pantheon reverb etc and softsynthes are coded
for 64 bit. Also, all 32 bit .VST softsynthes will run in a 64 bit
environment.
That would only leave 32 bit .DXi's which won't run in a 64 bit
environment.
Personally I don't run any of those so your "blind" comment" doesn't
apply to me.

Bryan wrote: Even most sighted people still use 32-bit Sonar on 64-bit
Windows for this reason.

Phil replied: Hmm, not so sure about that, smile. Think your just
trying to talk us out of going entirely 64 bit because CT doesn't
currently support that, grin.

Bryan wrote: So 32-bit Sonar on 64-bit Windows will be the top of the
mountain for quite a few years to come.

Phil replied: we shall see!

Bryan wrote: You still can use up to 3GB of RAM in Sonar when working
this way, which is 50% more than you could on 32-bit Windows, so there
is definitely a benefit.

Phil replied: agreed. I would imagine that this is not the same as
enabling the 3GB switch in XP because if you do that in XP, your still
bound by the constraints of a 32 bit operating system.

Bryan wrote: Plus, the wsapi drivers in Vista and Windows 7 allow for
0-latency direct monitoring, and the multimedia scheduler helps give
priority to recording apps.

Phil replied: agreed.

Bryan wrote: XP will very soon be old news.

Phil replied: and so will Vista, grin. From what I hear, Windows 7 runs
way less overhead when running than Vista. Won't be bothering with
Vista here but will almost certainly go for Windows 7 when it comes out.
That's assuming that they don't come out with a 64 bit version of Jaws
that supports running the 64 bit version of XP.
