It's hard to tell whether you're just copying the image to the SD
card as if it was any other file, or if you're using a utility that
lets you directly write the image to the SD card. On a Linux, Mac,
or BSD machine, this is usually done with the "dd" command; on
Windows you usually need to install a special utility to write the
disk image directly to the SD card and bypass the existing
file-system.
So it would help to know how you put the image on the SD card.

you waited the requisite couple minutes for it to fully boot,
and that you have an adequate power-supply to make sure it
doesn't flake out on you (I've accidentally used an
underpowered USB power-source and the symptoms are hard to
recognize because it's just flaky).
Are you doing an nmap to scan the network for it?
Are you checking your router/DHCP-server's control-panel to
see if it has extended a new DHCP lease to the RPi?
Did you try to SSH into it? If so, by name, or by IP address?
