Hi Manu and others!

Manu:
I’m a Mac-user as well, and I have used Audacity for a couple of months.
I have never got the selection bar to work probably due to some accessibility
issues in Audacity whereVoiceover will not read the numbers if you do not use
the Vo-keys and the arrow keys to read the numbers.
David Bales has written an excellent introduction to Audacity for users of
Jaws, but we can all benefit from this on the Mac too, so try to find this
guide. It is located in the help under advanced, accessibility, I believe.

When you are navigating Audacity you need to do this in a very windows fashion
way. That is not a bad thing, it is just a little unusual compared to how you
would use standard Mac applications.
What you need to do is to move the Mac’s keyboard cursor along with the
Voiceover cursor. That is done by pressing tab or shift-tab, as you do in
Windows. That is very much needed in the preferences since you otherwise will
miss some important informations, and the screen seems confusing. At least that
was what my experience was when i first used Audacity.

You will need to disable a certain checkbox inside the preferences that tells
Audacity to select everything by default, as mentioned by others on this list.

Now to the selection issue:
1. Record your sound.
2. Playback by pressing spacebar.
3. When you are at the position where you want the selection to start press
shift-a.
4. You can either press left bracket key to set the start of selection, or
simply just press space again to start playback again. Now you’ll hear the
sound from where the cursor is placed.
5. When you are at the position for the selection to end press the right
bracket key… perhaps press P first to pause before you set the end of selection
marker.

Now you can press spacebar and hear the entire selection.

That is how I do this most of the time.
Sorry for making things a little confusing, but here I have some questions for
selection as well:
I wish it would be possible to hear what is before and after the selection,
without removing the selection. I am not talking about the preview feature
where you can press e to hear how the edit will sound.
When I am selecting the last few seconds of a file I have an issue when I have
moved the cursor with shift-a. I can not play back and go to the left of the
cursor while I am playing the sound back. Another thing is that the increments
the movements are sometimes are way to big, so instead of hearing the last four
seconds, I hear 10 or 14 seconds instead.
And lastly:
… And if I set the cursor a wrong place with shift A I can’t get before that
spot, as mentioned, and sometimes I just need to hear what’s coming up if I
need to make some edits so the recording still sounds natural, and if I need to
move the cursor back to an earlier spot I have to press home to get to the
begining of the track instead of moving the cursof a little to the lfet or just
be able to hear a little to the left of the cursor.

Best regards
Thomas
