I think when we find a number 1 replaced by a letter l, this is usually a scanning error. The character recognition program, such as OpenBook, Kurtzwheil, Omnipage, etc. thinks that the number 1 is a letter l. Many times people who are reading it on the screen or seeing on paper can't tell the difference because the shapes are quite close in print. This is another example of having to proofread and clean up scanned material. Many years ago, when we were only using typewriters, some of the older typewriters used the letter l instead of the number 1. And, some people who were used to typing the letter l for the number 1 had a hard time developing the habit of using the key for the number 1 rather than hitting the letter l. But, I don't think that this occurs at all any more. If it does, it is only very infrequently. Speech users will occasionally find the year 1999 typed as l999 - L replacing the 1 in the second case. * * * * This message is via list duxuser at freelists.org. * To unsubscribe, send a blank message with * unsubscribe * as the subject to <duxuser-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>.
