We've just been looking at Word's "Smart Quotes" feature, and it isn't as smart is it should be. To begin with, there are actually SIX distinct windows characters, all available even as far back as Windows 3.1. Apostrophe Quotation Mark Left Single Quotation Mark Right Single Quotation Mark Left Double Quotation Mark Right Double Quotation Mark Anyone with access to Windows's Character Map program can verify this. However, when Word does its thing on Smart Quotes, it isn't even clever enough to look at its own spelling checker. Moreover the spell checker is clever enough to see that "isn't" is a valid word, but not clever enough to see that it should have an apostrophe and not a Right Single Quotation Mark. I'll say now that there's no chance of this being fixed for DBT 10.5, but in addition to my firing off a bug Report about Word 2003, (still in Beta) additional reports will soon be going off to other areas within Microsoft. I know BANA is trying to reduce these barriers between braille and print but we can and should never expect braille to be print. As for the capitals, I have always wondered how blind children in Britton learn what is to be capitalized and what is not, because they surely need to know this when they go into the job market. I guess 64 combinations are not sufficient, but the goal for Braille rules should be to represent the print with no ambiguity. -----Original Message----- From: Terri Pannett [mailto:pann1@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, May 05, 2003 1:12 PM To: duxuser@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [duxuser] Re: single quotes and apostrophes If the rules were change so both single quote and apostrophe were dot 3, the computer wouldn't have to distinguish between them--only the reader would.
